Outdoor advertising in Limpopo

Added to managing and controlling the provincial road network, RAL is also responsible for outdoor advertising on the Limpopo provincial roads.

In Limpopo outdoor advertising is still a relatively new phenomenon, yet its negative effects are already apparent as roads have become cluttered with advertisements, spoiling the environment and jeopardising road safety.

It was only a matter of time before a regulatory framework was adopted to deal with the issue of outdoor advertising, and in August 2004 the MEC for Public Works promulgated regulations governing billboard advertising. These regulations prescribed certain specifics and guidelines that should be adhered to when erecting billboards or similar structures that are visible from provincial and district roads. These regulations affect all commercial advertisers and individuals who depend on the proximity or existence of a provisional road to advertise. These regulations have been in effect since November 1st 2004.
