Limpopo’s Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Department to roll out more than Ten (10) major road infrastructure projects to the tune of R 1.2b over the next three years.

Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Jerry Ndou, announced today that the province’s roads will receive a major upgrade over the next three years.

The Department has made R 1.2bn available to the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) to complete roads that are partially completed, as well as to rehabilitate existing roads.

“Limpopo’s road network plays an important role in not only linking local industries to other economic hubs in South Africa thereby boosting Limpopo’s economic development, but also makes sustainable livelihoods possible for the people of the province,” said MEC Jerry Ndou.

Among the projects to be rolled out is the completion of the Ga-Mampuru Phasha road that connects Ga Mampuru, Phasha, Ga Malekane to Molekela in the Sekhukhune District. Contractors began tarring the road in 2011 but the job was never completed.

Upon his recent site visit to the area, the Honourable Premier of Limpopo, Chupu Mathabatha, declared the Ga-Mampuru Phasha a priority.

“The Ga-Mampuru Phasha road is a critical bi-modal road that also caters for freight passenger traffic. Therefore, it has been earmarked as a priority, and the upgrading and rehabilitation of the road will commence on in the next few days” said the MEC.

Road infrastructure projects will span all five of the province’s districts, with maintenance projects set to be completed within six months.

Since his appointment as MEC, Jerry Ndou has overseen the transformation of RAL, which includes the appointment of a new Board of Directors, a CEO, as well as a number of key executives within the Agency.

The Agency, under the helm of the new leadership team, has been tasked to investigate actions that led to the partial completion of the Province’s roads under the previous leadership.
